MUA of Tampa Bay is a network of doctors (Doctors of Osteopathy and Chiropractors) throughout the Tampa Bay region that are credentialed and certified to perform Manipulation Under Anesthesia. Our network utilizes a conservative approach to treating spinal pain that is safe and effective.
By the time we get to see many pain sufferers, they’ve already tried—and failed—the “usual” treatments for back, shoulder, neck and arm pain. If that’s you or a loved one, MUA may well be the solution to ending that pain once and for all
|
For those unfamiliar with MUA, and that’s not surprising since we’ve found few patients (or doctors for that matter) who’ve ever heard of the procedure, MUA is a safe, proven treatment that has worked for thousands of patients over the last 50 years. It’s not new, it’s not technological, and it’s non-surgical.
The procedure itself is exactly what it sounds like: After proper medical evaluation and testing, a patient is lightly anesthetized to achieve total relaxation. Then, a specially trained team of physicians perform specific maneuvers and muscle stretching movements on the affected portion of the spine or limb that would normally be too painful for a chronic pain patient to even consider.
The MUA process is non-invasive, painless and quickly accomplished
Today, there are more practitioners, but still very few across the U.S. That’s because MUA practitioners are highly skilled and specially certified in the procedure.
To gain full relief, the procedure is normally repeated over the course of three days in some sort of surgical center with an anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist as part of your team. Most patients gain between 50 -75% improvement during the first day of MUA.
Best news for MUA candidates: the procedure costs thousands of dollars less than traditional spine surgery and other more invasive treatments, and usually qualifies for insurance coverage.
For patients who have not found relief from conventional treatments, MUA, coupled with a simple post-procedure treatment and exercise program, can eliminate or greatly reduce chronic pain as well as restore lost range-of- motion. |

Why haven't I heard of MUA from my doctor?
Decades ago, osteopaths and many medical doctors were routinely taught the procedure. As technology and various drugs crept into medical practice the technique was taught less at medical schools and almost became a lost art.
But because MUA is based on specific, hands-on maneuvers and muscle stretching movements and is extremely effective, a few Chiropractors and Osteophaths picked up the “lost” technique in the last decade or two as an adjunct to their traditional manipulation techniques. |
